Plane Crash Trial Starts Soon
More than four years after a Hendrick Motorsports plane crash that killed 10 people on the way to the NASCAR Cup race Oct. 24, 2004, at Martinsville Speedway, lawsuits over who was responsible for the crash could finally go to trial in the next couple of weeks. A final pretrial conference is set for Friday in cases involving Hendrick Motorsports, the estates of the pilots, the U.S. government and the widows of Hendrick Motorsports engine builder Randy Dorton, general manager Jeff Turner and Tony Stewart pilot Scott Lathram (a passenger on the plane). The trial could start as early as next Monday in U.S. District Court in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Morgan McClure Motorsports To Run At Talladega
Having not competed in Sprint Cup competition since the 2007 season finale, Morgan McClure Motorsports (MMM) will make a return to the circuit in two weeks as they attempt the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. The 2.66-mile speedway is home to four of their 14 Sprint Cup career victories. Nationwide Series regular Eric McClure, will join forces with MMM, piloting the famed #4 Chevrolet for the Aaron’s 499 weekend. No stranger to MMM, the 30-year-old driver has competed in two Sprint Cup events and four Nationwide Series events for the organization, earning a best finish of 26th and 22nd respectively.
Talladega Donates Tickets
In front of the Samson City Hall today, Talladega Superspeedway President Rick Humphrey presented Mayor Clay King with 1,000 tickets to the April 26 Aaron’s 499 in hopes of providing some relief and excitement to the devastated Geneva County town. Samson was the site of a horrific mass shooting on March 10 that left 11 people dead and an entire community grieving. King will first distribute tickets to the victims’ families and public-safety personnel that responded to the shootings. Additional tickets will be held at City Hall for any residents that would like to attend the Aaron’s 499.
Darlington Signs GoDaddy
For years, Darlington Raceway’s flagship NASCAR race was known as the Southern 500, but over time “Southern” was dropped in favor of title sponsors, most recently Dodge. Not only is “Southern” back in the race’s title this year — an attempt to revive the tradition around the race and the mystique of the venue known as “The track too tough to tame” — but so is GoDaddy.com, the event’s new presenting sponsor. The Southern 500 presented by GoDaddy.com, now Darlington’s lone Sprint Cup date, runs May 9 on Fox.

NASCAR Nationwide Series Under the Lights at Phoenix on ESPN2
The NASCAR Nationwide Series heads to the desert this weekend for an event Friday night at Phoenix International Raceway, and ESPN2 will have a live, high definition telecast of the 200-mile race on Friday, April 17, at 9 p.m. ET. ESPN2 is the home of the NASCAR Nationwide Series all season, with selected races on ESPN and ABC. The race re-airs Saturday, April 18, at noon on ESPN Classic.
Wallace May Move To Cup Series
NASCAR Nationwide Series car owner Rusty Wallace said he hopes to move his two-car team to the Sprint Cup Series in 2010. But the situation would have to be perfect. Rusty Wallace Racing fields two Chevrolets, for Brendan Gaughan and Rusty’s son, Steve, in the Nationwide Series. “Ideally, if all the moons lined up, I’d start in 2010,” Wallace said at Nashville Superspeedway, where the Nashville 300 will be held Saturday. “Two cars. I’d want Stephen and Brendan to go right in.” But Rusty Wallace would need a partnership with an existing team in order to stock enough inventory of cars and engines.

Kentucky lawsuit resolution not likely in time to secure 2010 date: The likelihood that Kentucky Speedway will be awarded a 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup race has become even more remote because an antitrust lawsuit by the track founders against NASCAR and International Speedway Corp. now likely won’t be resolved until July at the earliest. The case, which is in U.S. Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, is not included in the hearing calendar finalized Monday for a two-week session beginning April 20. Although the court could still add the case to the schedule, that would be rare in a case such as this one. The next two-week hearing session begins June 8 – the Monday prior to the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the track. NASCAR Chairman Brian France has said that NASCAR will not consider a realignment request for a Sprint Cup date from current owner Speedway Motorsports Inc. until the case is resolved. NASCAR typically begins the sanctioning process in April or May, and France has said that the track is running out of time to begin the realignment process.(Scene Daily:)(4-14-2009)

Sad News – Chuck Gaa: Charles ‘Chuck’ Wilson Gaa, 63, passed away at his home in Marshall, N.C. on Saturday, April 4, 2009. Chuck owned GAACO Enterprises in Atlanta and was contracted by Buick and Chevrolet to design and build a series of radically different NASCAR race cars for owners such as Junior Johnson and Travis Carter while serving as GM’s suspension and chassis consultant. Chuck became involved in stock car racing with Jim Welty in USAC while still a teenager and served as chief mechanic for A.J. Foyt’s USAC Championship winning Ford for Jack Bowsher while still in college. Following graduation, he worked for two years for Petty Enterprises designing and fabricating cars and later he worked with Cotton Owens and Jim Ruggles before starting GAACO. In his years in NASCAR, Chuck worked with drivers such as Richard Petty, Pete Hamilton, Neil Bonnett, and Harry Gant, and owners such as Jr. Johnson, Cotton Owens, and Travis Carter. In addition to his work in NASCAR, Chuck was commissioned by General Motors to build a number of road racing cars for both the IMSA and Trans Am series and served as a suspension consultant for Jaguar cars with their GTP car in IMSA. Chuck also designed and built the GTP 935 Porches driven to victories in the 24 hours of Daytona, the 12 hours of Sebring, and the World Endurance Championship by John Paul and John Paul, Jr. Following his retirement, he moved to Marshall, N.C. and found a home within the community and with Builders Express in Mars Hill, N.C. In his spare time, he volunteered on the Madison County Arts Council. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Adam Gaa of Opelika, Ala.; daughter, Rae Powers and husband Ian Randall of Brighton, England; brothers, John Gaa and wife Cynthia of Willis, Texas, James Gaa and wife Marilyn of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Thomas Gaa and wife Karen of Menlo Park, Calif.; and a precious grandson, Alex Powers Randall. Donations may be made to the Madison County Arts Council, 90 S. Main St., Marshall, N.C. 28753. An online register is available at ashevillemortuaryservices.com.(4-14-2009)

Hendrick plane crash trial could start later this month: More than four years after a Hendrick Motorsports plane crash that killed 10 people on the way to the NASCAR Cup race Oct. At issue is who is responsible for the accident – HMS Holdings (parent company of Hendrick Motorsports), the pilots themselves or the air-traffic controllers. According to court documents, the crash resulted when the pilots overshot the airport by five miles and failed to follow the missed-approach procedure for the Martinsville/Blue Ridge Airport, which requires a climbing right turn to avoid Bull Mountain. The plane, in heavy cloud cover, climbed without turning and crashed into the mountain, killing all 10 aboard.(Scene Daily)(4-13-2009)
$10 Million, Just for Motor Oil: The most advanced piece of technology in a NASCAR vehicle these days isn’t its engine, its suspension or anything made of carbon fiber. It’s the motor oil. Joe Gibbs Racing has spent about $1 million a year over the past decade to perfect its motor oil. As a result, its engines have squeezed out an extra 10 horsepower, a roughly 2% increase that can be a serious advantage in NASCAR races. With NASCAR increasingly cracking down on the use of technology in the sport to cut costs, motor oil is one of the last places teams can innovate without restraint. Companies like Shell, Quaker State and Mobil also make special oils packed with synthetic lubricants, new polymers and experimental molecules for the teams they sponsor. All this has spawned a culture of secrecy. Shell was so worried about protecting its motor-oil formula that it recently refused to allow used race oil to be sold as a souvenir to NASCAR fans. The concern, a spokesman said, is that someone could “reverse engineer” the used oil to see what its properties are. Joe Gibbs Racing, one of NASCAR’s richest and most-successful teams, won’t say which company assembles its synthetic oil and will only identify the scientists who work on its formula as “William the chemist,” who’s in charge of formulating the oil, and “Douglas,” who used to work for NASA and is in charge of analyzing the team’s worn engine parts under a microscope. “I don’t want other teams trying to find out who these guys are,” says Lake Speed Jr., who runs the team’s oil program.(Wall Street Journal)(4-13-2009)
Means honored by county hall of fame: NASCAR’s biggest star and the people of Huntsville, Ala., have something in common these days. They both recognize Huntsville resident Jimmy Means as a true American hero. Dale Earnhardt Jr. for years has been vocal and enthusiastic in his support of Means, a journeyman driver in the series now known as Sprint Cup but who now fields under-funded cars in the Nationwide Series. The Huntsville folks are making their affection official Monday, inducting Means into the Huntsville/Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame. Veteran Huntsville Times reporter Mark McCarter says Means is the first race driver inducted into the Hall.(Racin’ Today)(4-13-2009)

* Justin Allgaier leads Brendan Gaughan by five points (63-58) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway.
* Three Raybestos Rookies rank inside the top-10 in the Nationwide Series championship standings: Allgaier (seventh), Gaughan (eighth) and Scott Lagasse Jr. (ninth).

Nationwide COT could be pushed back to 2011: Work on the NASCAR Nationwide Series car of tomorrow is proceeding, though the sanctioning body’s ban on nearly all testing for 2009 could push the introduction of the new car back to 2011. Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash said Saturday at Nashville Superspeedway that Toyota’s version of the car, the Camry, will return to the wind tunnel for testing this week. The other three manufacturers who take part in the series have all had their versions certified aerodynamically. The car has been officially tested on the race track twice, but both tests were last year. And given the struggling U.S. economy, many in the Nationwide garage want NASCAR to hold off another year before rolling the car out. Balash said the sanctioning body will listen to opinions of teams before making a decision. The original introduction was planned for August of this year, but that was pushed back to 2010. Now the car could be held off until 2011.(Scene Daily)(4-13-2009)

The 2004 Sportsman of the Year in the NASCAR Winston West Series and former CASCAR (Canadian Tire Series), Rookie of the Year will be making his series debut at the Phoenix International Raceway this weekend. No Dash 4 Cash winner: The $25,000 designated to the race winner for the first Dash 4 Cash will increase to $50,000 at the Kentucky race after a full-time Nationwide Series driver failed to win the race. Rusty Wallace, Inc. considering 2010 move to Cup: NASCAR Nationwide Series car owner [#62 & #64] Rusty Wallace said he hopes to move his two-car team to the Sprint Cup Series in 2010. But the situation would have to be perfect. Rusty Wallace Racing fields two Chevys, for Brendan Gaughan and Rusty’s son, Steve, in the Nationwide Series. Also, RWR would need the right level of sponsorship. Richard Childress Racing provided RWR with engines in the Nationwide Series, and Wallace said he’s had casual conversations about a Cup alliance with RCR. Wallace said his shop facilities in Mooresville, N.C. would be adequate for a Cup team. The team currently does its own bodies there and has a large fabrication area.Scene Daily)(4-12-2009)

For Stanton fans-This weekend, Stanton Barrett and the No. 98 Interush.net/Team 3G team are going the extra mile during the IndyCar Series event at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in Long Beach, Calif. The team will feature two local businesses who themselves recently helped make a difference in the community for two different charities. Studley of Los Angeles, Calif., a leading commercial real estate services firm specializing in tenant representation, and also Fremont College® of Cerritos, Calif., will each be featured on the No. 98 machine for Barrett for their support of the charities Hearts with Hope and Faces of our American Heroes respectively.
For Glendale, Ariz. native Michael McDowell (No. 47 Tom’s Snacks Toyota), this spring’s trip to Phoenix International Raceway is a matter of a different series and renewed karma.A year ago, McDowell finished 34th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Subway Fresh Fit 500. Twelve months later, McDowell has shifted his talents to the NASCAR Nationwide Series behind the wheel of a JTG-Daugherty Racing Toyota. The Raybestos Rookie-of-the-Year contender, who admittedly struggled in NASCAR’s premier series after being plucked from a far less competitive environment, has turned in solid performances during the season’s first six races. He’s ranked 13th in NASCAR Nationwide Series points standings following a 15th-place finish at Nashville Superspeedway. McDowell led his first laps in series competition at Nashville.Ironically, the NASCAR Nationwide Series is where the 24-year-old McDowell had hoped to be in 2008. The offer of the seat at Michael Waltrip Racing, however, was impossible to refuse — especially since it was the only NASCAR national series opportunity on the table.“My plan never was to go from the ARCA Re/Max Series to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series,” said McDowell earlier in the season. “Now I get back to where I should have been in the first place and I’ll be (better) able to show my abilities.” McDowell called last year’s experience “humbling” as he ran far behind the race leaders. There was an upside.“That (Sprint Cup) experience definitely is going to help me this year,” he said. (NASCAR)

Joey Logano NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion Interview – Nashville Superspeedway
Eighteen-year-old Joey Logano captured his first Nationwide Series victory of the season and the second of his career in the Pepsi 300 at Nashville Superspeedway.
Joey Logano:
It’s big for me, you know it’s an awesome confidence booster for sure. You know, looking and saying hey I can do this, I am here for a reason, I can win races. That’s big, you know, just to reassure yourself that, and I’m sure this is all going to keep carrying on— you’ve got to build on this momentum and keep going.
Logano was able to hold off teammate Kyle Busch for the win.
Kyle Busch:
He had a better car on the short run, we had a better long run car, and you know I want to thank Z-Line, NOS Energy Drink, Toyota, all the guys on this team they did a great job. It’s just a shame we weren’t able to get out there and win this thing. You know, it’s kind of frustrating but we finished second today.
Logano had a good feeling about the race from the start of the weekend.
Logano:
You know the car was good right off the bat, we qualified great, we practiced great and you know it started going and Kyle got by us—the car just kept getting tighter and tighter on the long runs and Dave just kept adjusting it and adjusting it and we were really good on the short runs and then we kept tightening up as we kept going so. As you look at Kyle back there at the end of the race and you get that clean air back on my nose and I know he was tight so that kind of made it worse for him and it was good enough to hold him off. It’s cool to have Joe Gibbs race a one-two finish. That’s a big deal for all the guys at the shop too.
Third place-finisher Brad Keselowski was asked why he was happier than Busch, who finished a spot ahead of him.
Brad Keselowski:
Highlight that as the question of the year. Do you have enough time for me today to answer that? Obviously you know he’s running two series so when you come to the Nationwide level as a driver like himself that’s you know as successful as he is, sometimes when you’re not winning you’re not happy.

NASCAR Nationwide Series
Saturday’s 225-lap event at Nashville came down to the two Gibbs’ Toyota Camry drivers, although both had problems. Kyle Busch had fender damage after a bumping incident with Michael McDowell on a restart. Joey Logano had an engine misfire at top speed, apparently due to an alternator problem. Logano was able to get around Busch with 10 laps to go, just before a multi-car accident on the front straightaway forced a red flag to clean up debris. Logano was able to hold on by .487 second. He averaged 118.145 mph with 10 yellows for 40 laps. Logano led 95 laps. Brad Keselowski was third in a Chevrolet. Carl Edwards was fifth and maintained a 23-point edge over Busch.

In these crazy economic times, the last thing anyone needs is one more obstacle toward making a living. So it seemed ridiculous that defending NASCAR truck champion Johnny Benson and his team would be told that if their potential sponsorship deal came through – from an undisclosed gun manufacturer – they wouldn’t be shown on television. But that’s what happened, Benson told his hometown Grand Rapids (Mich.) Press. First he thought it was NASCAR’s call, but then he learned, “apparently it is the TV.” One problem. Not only was the representation of the situation untrue as it related to Speed TV, the series’ primary network, but no one in a position to make such a decision for Speed even knew about the sponsor, a spokesman said. Although Newscorp, Speed’s parent company, follows a common television practice in not accepting advertising for weapons and ammunition, the network “does not omit coverage” of a team or venue because of such a sponsor, the spokesman said. NASCAR has had firearm sponsors before; a shotgun manufacturer was prominent in the Cup series in the 1990s, and more recently an online dealer has become involved in the truck series.(Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)(4-10-2009)

Hat Man Hillenburg Doing the Rockingham Hat Dance
Promoter Working Hard in Prep for ARCA RE/MAX Carolina 200 Sunday
ROCKINGHAM NC (4-13-09) – As history at times would suggest, successful racecar drivers do not necessarily make successful racetrack promoters. With a year under his belt as track president/promoter of Rockingham Speedway, former ARCA RE/MAX Series driving champion Andy Hillenburg can relate.
“I can see why that would be,” said Hillenburg, who is very busy preparing for this weekend’s ARCA RE/MAX Carolina 200 at Rockingham. “The reason is, is that it’s very hard to take the racer hat off. Actually, it’s not so much taking off the racer hat as much as it’s adding the fan hat and the sanctioning body hat. You’ve got to wear them all; and understand what it means to wear each one. If you came into this with a racecar driver hat or the owner hat without consideration of the others, I can see how easy it would be to fail.”
From the racer helmet to a promoter hat, Hillenburg, over the course of an incredible career that dates back to his Hoosier roots where he was the Bloomington Speedway sprint car champion in 1985, is wearing more hats than ever these days. In addition to running day-to-day operations at Rockingham Speedway, the Indianapolis, Indiana born and bred racer is still running his Fast Track High Performance Driving School as well as a full-time ARCA RE/MAX Series race team with Bryan Silas driving.
“Regardless of where I am, I conduct business at each of my businesses every day. If I’m going to the track first, I always check in with my race team and the driving school first. I actually really enjoy it. The busier I am, the more I like it. I like being able to challenge myself daily. I’m a firm believer in hard work.”
Hillenburg will admit however that the promoter hat is not an easy one to wear, and that it cannot be learned in one year’s time.
“I don’t want to be silly enough to say that I actually have this all figured out. I have a new found respect for guys like Humpy Wheeler and Ron Drager. I’ve learned so much over the last year; there have been many, many surprises. I’ve learned that it doesn’t get any easier. I just get more organized, which helps.”
It probably didn’t help that at just about the time Hillenburg was taking over at Rockingham, the economy was crashing all around him, and continued on its crash course until it landed in full-blown recession.
“It’s definitely tough, no doubt about it. I mean, you could argue that it was the wrong time to make the biggest business decision of my life. But I remain committed and confident to this facility, the racetrack, the tradition and history of Rockingham Speedway; and I believe it’s got a very solid future. I’m confident it’s going to be a success. The greatest rewards come from the greatest risks.”
And talk about risks. As if managing the one-mile, high-banked Rockingham oval wasn’t enough, Hillenburg, with help from key investors, built a flat, half-mile track on the same speedway grounds.
“It was initially built for one-on-one driver development through our Fast Track High Performance Driving School program.”
The new track is also strikingly similar to Martinsville Speedway, and with NASCAR’s limited testing opportunities, the new track became the perfect place for NASCAR teams to test in advance of their short-track events.
“We actually had the track complete two months before NASCAR’s new (testing) rules. Made me look smart though,” added Hillenburg with a chuckle. “But we built it for one-on-one driver training; the testing became a byline of our operations. We hope to be racing on the track in a couple years. With the flat corners, it’s got the whole gamut of things you need to teach drivers – breaking, rotating through the center of the corners and accelerating off.”
However, all attention this weekend will be on the historic, high-banked Rockingham oval where the ARCA RE/MAX Series cars will congregate for the Carolina 200 this Sunday, April 19th. For Hillenburg, that means getting out his favorite racetrack promoter hat and start thinking like, well, a fan would think.
“Believe it or not, if I had to put my finger on what’s been the most challenging it would probably be concessions and souvenirs – knowing what the race fans want.
“It really comes down to promoting. There’s only so much advertising in the budget. You’ve got to tell as many people as possible about what you’re doing; and that’s very difficult. Every day I do this job, the more respect I have for racetrack promoters. Letting people know about your next race is harder than it looks.
“It’s neat to be able to bring good, quality entertainment to Rockingham Speedway. We’re as prepared as we’re going to be. I’d like to encourage race fans on their way to “The Rock” to bring one or two extra people. My goals are always no empty seats and packed RVs on the property.”
The ARCA RE/MAX Series will begin the Carolina 200 race weekend at Rockingham with a hauler parade through the city beginning at 12:30 PM Friday, April 17. The ARCA RE/MAX Series Hauler Parade through the City of Rockingham is part of the city’s Thunderfest event, a free, interactive promotion for race fans on Friday, April 17 in the Rockingham town square. Thunderfest is from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Friday and includes live bands, a food and beer tent and an ARCA RE/MAX Series driver autograph session from 6-7 p.m. The ARCA Racing Network will broadcast live from Thunderfest all day on Friday and race fans can listen to the coverage and view live video of Thunderfest on ARCA Nation.
ARCA RE/MAX Series on-track activity is from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM followed by Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell at 2:30. Driver introductions go off Sunday afternoon raceday at 12:30 PM followed by the start of the Carolina ARCA RE/MAX 200 shortly after 1:00. The race is also live on SPEED with coverage beginning at 1:00 PM Eastern.
The race will also feature live Timing & Scoring at Arcaracing.com or ARCANation.com accompanied by live streaming audio of all on-track activity.
The UARA-STARS Late Model Series is also on the race card with a 70-lap race Saturday.

Separate Earnhardt Jr. and Eury Jr.? Been There … Done That
At times I think NASCAR fans have very short memories, and this week – with many in the Junior Nation demanding Tony Eury Jr.’s head on a platter – is one of those times. Has everyone forgotten that this “quick fix” was already tried once before – and failed miserably?

Focus is on Nationwide Series as Cup Takes Easter Off
by Rebecca Gladden
Doug Turnbull’s “Who’s Hot / Who’s Not in Sprint Cup:”
COLD: Joey Logano – Four straight finishes of 30th or worse do not bode well for the only rookie that now has competed in each Cup race this year. Sunday’s race started well for “Sliced Bread,” beginning the day by starting 10th, but he wasted no time falling back. Logano ran around 30th for most of the day and ended up finishing there. A scrape with the wall and an ensuing green flag pit stop only added to the misery of the last month for the Home Depot No. 20 team.
