Prelude Rescheduled To Sept. 9th
The Prelude to the Dream charity Dirt Late Model race at Eldora Speedway has been rescheduled for Sept. 9, track owner Tony Stewart announced Friday. And thanks to sponsorship from Gillette, the event will once more be available on HBO Pay-Per-View. All seven of Gillette’s drivers featured in the “young gun” program planned to compete in the event, which helped lead to the sponsorship of the event. The Prelude was originally scheduled for June 3, but had to be rescheduled because of rain. The race now falls on the Wednesday before the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Richmond International Raceway, the final race before the championship-determining field is set. “Gillette has saved us all,” Stewart said Friday at Pocono Raceway.

Pocono Goodyear Tire Notes
This is the same combination of left-and right-side tire codes that NASCAR Sprint Cup teams ran at Pocono in June — this is the only Sprint Cup track at which these two tire codes will be used together in 2009, though they will each be used separately at one other Cup venue — this left-side code (D-4178) was run at Indianapolis last week — this right-side code (D-4160) will be used at both races at Bristol this season — this right-side was also run at both Pocono races last season, and at all four Bristol races between 2007-2008 — as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Pocono — air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

JTG Daugherty Racing to re-new with Waltrip: Tad Geschickter, owner of the #47 JTG Daugherty Racing Toyota that Marcos Ambrose drives in the Sprint Cup Series, has agreed in principle to extend his partnership with Michael Waltrip Racing into 2010. An announcement is expected next week along with additional sponsorship for the car. Ambrose originally signed a five-year deal with Geschickter which runs until 2011, but given the driver’s accelerated learning curve, don’t be surprised if that contract isn’t extended as well.(FoxSports)(8-3-2009)

#48-Jimmie Johnson’s White House visit will have to wait. So will the start of the Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway. Steady rain postponed Sunday’s race and it has been rescheduled for 12:15pm/et Monday. NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said the date of a future visit was being discussed with White House officials.(Associated Press)(8-2-2009)

It was Park’s first NASCAR Camping World Series East victory in 13 years [1996 at Nazareth Speedway]. Since then, he has collected wins in the Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series and Camping World Series Truck Series. He has also won on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. With the win, Park locked up a secured spot in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown. #17 team has some help at Pocono: #17-Matt Kenseth’s Crew chief Drew Blickensderfer has a little extra help this week at Pocono Raceway: two high school students from Minnesota, who are helping to prep the DeWalt Tools Ford. Matthew Ludwig, 17, and Justin Dwyer, 18, were national winners in the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition, emerging from a field of more than 9,700 entries of high school juniors and seniors from all 50 states. Part of their reward is the chance to spend much of a week with Kenseth’s team. They attended a test session at Rockingham, N.C. with Kenseth, toured the Roush Fenway shop in Concord, N.C. with Blickensderfer and will get a taste of all activities at Pocono Raceway, from preparing the car on Friday to being with the team behind pit road on Sunday. “It’s my first (NASCAR) race, so to be in the pits at Pocono will be really cool,” said Dwyer, who helped replace a front coil spring and adjust the exhaust system on Friday. Ludwig, who worked on body aerodynamics Friday, expressed surprise at the level of hands-on experience being offered. “Actually being able to sit down and talk to the (crew) guys has been great,” he said. “They’re really down-to-earth. They’ve been teaching us about what’s going on why they’re making certain adjustments.” Blickensderfer tried to give the students as much hands-on experience as he could. “There aren’t too many 17-18-year-old kids who can say they got to hang out with Matt Kenseth and his crew,” Blickensderfer. “We’ll at least let them see everything we’re doing and, if we can give them an opportunity to work on the car, it will be a memory that should last a while for them.” Ludwig and Dwyer attend Fairbault High School, a public high school about 40 miles south of Minneapolis. Under tutelage of instructor Mark Lessman, Fairbault has emerged a perennial skills competition contender, winning. two national titles (2003, 2009) and 13 of the last 16 state championships.(USA Today)(8-2-2009)

Red Bull getting closer on manufacturer, Vickers: Red Bull Racing’s vice president and general manager, Jay Frye, spent nearly 24 hours traveling to Austria for a three-hour meeting last Tuesday at his company’s headquarters, and Friday at Pocono Raceway confirmed the team is evaluating manufacturers for 2010 and getting closer to re-signing lead driver #83-Brian Vickers. “And that was a long [meeting] — usually they’re only an hour or two,” Frye said, laughing. “The meeting was great and there’s lots of enthusiasm for what we’re doing with the program. I would think in the next short while we’d have some sort of announcement of what the future is and what we have going on. I think what happened at the meeting was, all the scenarios were laid out, and they’re all great scenarios, but it was about what’re we going to do 10 years from now, or five years from now? “A lot of stuff was exchanged and there are a lot of things they have to review. I had a couple things I had to come back and do that have been done, so in a very short while we should have some things resolved.” Vickers has said he has an oral agreement to continue with Red Bull Racing Team, for which he’s driven the #83 Toyota since 2007, the inaugural year for both Red Bull and the manufacturer in the Cup Series. Frye, who joined Red Bull’s third-year Cup program last season, said that’s part of the reasoning that has put Red Bull in position to evaluate whether it will stay with the Toyota Camrys it’s run since it joined the series, or switch to another carmaker, speculated to be Chevrolet. David Wilson, senior vice president of Toyota Racing Development, came from a meeting with Frye to Pocono’s infield media center and said, despite knowing about Red Bull’s evaluation process, the manufacturer hadn’t changed its focus. “The bottom line is we continue to work with Red Bull and we continue to desire a longer-term partnership,” Wilson said. A Chevrolet spokesperson said the manufacturer would have no comment regarding its team lineup. Frye said Red Bull had no designs currently on expanding beyond two cars or diversifying into the Nationwide Series, where Vickers’ teammate, #82-Scott Speed, has about a half-dozen more races to run this season with Michael Waltrip Racing. “My opinion right now is we have to make sure these two teams are shored up and competing at a high level every week, and once you can do that, that’s when you start looking at expanding,” Frye said. “The whole team has come a long way, we made great gains in 2008 and statistically we’re ahead of where we were last year. Just like everybody else, we’ve had some bad luck and we’ve had some things happen.”(in part from NASCAR.com)(8-2-2009)

Petty says all four teams will stay…for now: Richard Petty shot down rumors that Sorenson was in danger of being yanked from the #43 Dodge for #44-Allmendinger for performance and financial reasons. “We’re going to run all drivers the rest of the year,” Petty said. “We’ll sort of see what happens after this season and we’ll make our decisions on next year.” All four drivers are signed through 2010, but Petty said there are no assurances the team can keep all the drivers. “The economy is going to dictate to us what we need to do,” he said. “Right now, we’re just trying to keep our head above water, hoping that the economy comes around so that we can continue to run four cars.” RPM laid off employees and sliced salaries earlier this year in the fallout from Chrysler’s Chapter 11 filing. Petty’s first choice is to run all four cars in a full Cup season, but economics may decide otherwise. “We can’t sacrifice three to try and run a fourth car,” Petty said. “Right now, we’re still breathing air and we’re able to run four cars the rest of the season.”(in part from the Associated Press)(8-2-2009)

Frontstretch At The Track: Iowa Speedway
Keselowski Wins, Busch Second … Again
by Jeff Meyer

A sellout crowd of nearly 60,000 fans stood cheering wildly as the green flag flew to start the Nationwide Series’ inaugural race, the U.S. Cellular 250, at Iowa Speedway Saturday afternoon near the small town of Newton.

When the checkered flag flew, they were all on their feet again … although not everyone was a fan of the winner. Sure, Brad Keselowski may have been the one standing in Victory Lane … but it was the man he defeated that left everyone standing up to applaud.

“Everyone likes someone who beats Kyle Busch,” joked Keselowski after being coaxed across the finish line by the screams of a sold out crowd. It was the driver’s second win of the season, capping a scintillating race filled with side-by-side action in which he and Busch swapped the lead several times before the No. 88 car came out on top.

“I don’t think you can deny a track that puts on racing this good a Cup race,” he added, immediately singing its praises after sitting down in the media center. “That’s what NASCAR needs right now – excitement like we had today.”

To claim the win, Keselowski had to work for it even though he started with an edge. With the Cup Series appearing in Pocono this weekend, usual suspects Busch, Carl Edwards, and Kevin Harvick all started in the back as each had other drivers qualify their cars earlier in the day … but it didn’t take any of them long to reach the front. While Keselowski, starting from the 11th position, took the lead on lap 43, the familiar No. 18 of Kyle Busch charged hard through the ranks and by lap 80 had passed him for the top spot.

For the remainder of the event, Busch and Keselowski seemed oblivious to the rest of the field as they battled up front, each taking a handful of turns at the point. The final lead change between Busch and Keselowski occurred on lap 242, and a joyous roar from the crowd erupted as Keselowski’s No. 88 finally passed the No. 18, holding on to the lead for the remaining eight laps to take the checkers.

Rounding out the top 10 after Busch were Jason Leffler, Edwards, Kelly Bires, Jason Keller, Kenny Wallace, Michael McDowell, Scott Lagasse, Jr. and Stephen Leicht. Roush Fenway development driver Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. won the pole, but struggled en route to a 22nd place finish.

Notes:
• Kelly Bires captured his third top 10 and second top 5 finish this year by posting a fifth in what was only the third full race he has run this season. Despite Iowa being his eleventh start, most of his other efforts this year could be considered “start and parks.” But this time, the No. 10 Braun Racing Toyota Bires often drives for had sponsorship from the Fraternal Order of Eagles, allowing the young talent to make the most of his opportunity in top-tier equipment.
• Kenny Wallace posted his best Nationwide Series finish to date this year by capturing the seventh spot.
• “I wish they’d all been firsts. That’d certainly be nice,” said Busch when asked about tying a record for first and second place finishes. “Man, I should be so grateful and so happy to finish second, but I am not, man. When you finish second twelve times in a year, it really gets to ya.” After saying that, Busch apologized to Jason Leffler and Michael McDowell, who were sitting beside him, knowing that they would kill to have a record like that!
• Scott Lagasse, Jr., in what was to be his final ride in the No. 11 America’s Incredible Pizza Toyota (a release that has confounded many), finished ninth. With a showing like that, maybe, just maybe, the ones that sent him packing are rethinking their decision.

Kansas race moves to Sunday in 2010: When the Indy Racing League announces its schedules for the 2010 season later today, there will be a new twist for Kansas Speedway’s 10th anniversary. The IndyCar Series, for the first time, will run on a Saturday instead of a Sunday at Kansas Speedway. The IndyCar race will be Saturday, May 1; the NASCAR Camping World Trucks Series, traditionally a Saturday event, will move to Sunday, May 2. Because of television conflicts with Talladega, Kansas Speedway started the IndyCar and trucks races after 4 p.m. In 2010, they can start at noon or 1, Central time because the Sprint Cup series will be at Richmond on Saturday night, so there will not be conflicts on either day. “From the feedback we received from the fans, we were trying to move the start times earlier in the day, and this works out well,” said Jeff Boerger, president of Kansas Speedway. “Fans were telling us we were starting the races too late. Saturday was not so much of a concern, but Sunday is a concern because people have to get back to work on Monday. “If we’re starting the races at 4, by time they get out of the race track, it’s 6 o’clock and they have some driving to do because so many of our fans come from outside of Kansas City. It’s a switch that accommodates schedules and times, and something we all agreed to do to help the fans and accomplish what we want.” (Kansas City Star)(7-31-2009)

Lofton Wins Pennsylvania ARCA 200 at Pocono; Regains Point Lead

LONG POND PA (8-1-09) – Justin Lofton, in the Lofton Cattle Toyota, held off a hard-charging Matt Merrell during a green-white-checker finish to win Saturday’s Pennsylvania ARCA 200 at Pocono Raceway.

Lofton crossed the final stripe three lengths in front of Merrell to earn his second consecutive ARCA RE/MAX Series victory and fourth of his career.

“Honestly when the 77 (Parker Kligerman) ended up in the wall I was kind of relieved because I knew that he was our biggest threat at the finish,” said Lofton. “Not that I wish bad about anyone. Parker and I had a great battle going at the beginning of the race and we had a really good battle going here in the June race too, so it would have been great if we could have battled side-by-side for the race finish. It’s unfortunate for him but it really helped us in the point standings. It’s amazing how fast the points can take a turn.”

Kligerman came into Pocono Raceway with a 100 point lead on Lofton, but left five points behind new leader Lofton.

Kligerman, with less than four laps to go, had just passed Steve Arpin for second position and was gaining on Lofton when Arpin made contact with Kligerman coming off turn three. Kligerman spun and made contact with the wall, bringing out the final caution period of the race that set the stage for the green-white-checker finish.

Merrell finished second for the second consecutive race.

“This was actually our last scheduled race of the year in the ARCA RE/MAX Series,” said Merrell. “We are out of funding. I love coming to Pocono Raceway. The track has some interesting turns and as a racer I find it really challenging.”

Craig Goess, in the Greenville Toyota of North Carolina Toyota, finished a career-best third.

“I could see the contact between the 25 and the 77 and I think the consensus was that it was bound to happen,” said Goess. “It was just a matter of when and where. I was pretty busy when they made contact trying to determine whether to go high or low. It turned out okay for us in the end, which was good.”

Arpin, in his first race with Venturini Motorsports, fell to fourth in the final running order after leading nine laps.

“It was an awesome first weekend with Venturini Motorsports,” said Arpin. “We had an awesome car and it was a pleasure to drive. It’s a bad deal that we got together with Parker there at the end. He races all of us clean each and every week and I feel horrible for getting into him; we just got a little tight and got his left rear. He had a shot at winning that race. All of us here at Venturini Motorsports are excited of the new partnership and we are going to win some races this year.”

Frank Kimmel finished fifth in the Ansell-Menards Ford.

“A top-five is a good, solid day for this Ansell- Menards team,” said Kimmel. “Pit strategy helped us there in the beginning and if we would have had a longer green flag run at the time, we probably would have led some laps. Overall, the car was pretty good but I could barely run through the tunnel turn; the car was pushing so bad. But still it was a great day for the team and for all the Ansell fans and employees in attendance.”

Lofton led 65 of 80 laps overall and had a comfortable lead over Arpin and Kligerman with less than 10 laps remaining when the caution flag waved for Barry Fitzgerald, who stalled in turn one. That bunched up the field for the restart with four laps to go that led to the incident between Arpin and Kligerman.

Kligerman, who led seven laps, battled Lofton for the lead for much of the early going before first-round pit stops shuffled the running order. Kligerman also had to make an unscheduled pit stop to remove the catch-can mistakenly left in the car during a routine stop. Regardless, Kligerman brought the crowd to its feet on several occasions as he raced his way back into the mix from the tail-end of the lead-lap line.

Tom Hessert charged from the 28th starting position to finish sixth in the Cherry Hill Classis Cars Ford. Robb Brent battled back from one lap down to finish seventh in the Orchard Chrysler Dodge Jeep Dodge. Justin Marks, in a second Venturini Motorsports Toyota, finished eighth. Pennsylvania favorites Bobby Gerhart and Kyle Martel were ninth and 10th respectively.

Tony Palumbo was transported to a local hospital following an on-track incident in turn one on lap nine. Palumbo, of Frankfurt, Illinois, was able to exit his No. 70 NOTW.com Ford under his own power following the incident. After being examined at the infield care center, Palumbo was transported for further evaluation.

The ARCA RE/MAX Series travels next to the Illinois State Fairgrounds mile-dirt in Springfield, Illinois for the annual Allen Crowe 100 Sunday afternoon, August 23rd.
