Ford Named Best Crew Chief
Mike Ford, crew chief for the No. 11 FedEx Toyota driven by Denny Hamlin, has been named the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race after Sunday’s Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway. After waiting through the rain delay on Sunday and fighting emotions all weekend, Hamlin and his No. 11 team started the race on Monday with great optimism. Despite fighting an ill-handling race car throughout practice on Saturday, Hamlin and Ford knew they had made the right changes for a good shot at the win.

Gilliland Ready for The Glen, new sponsor, new car#: David Gilliland is ready for The Glen and to debut his new TaxSlayer.com colors on the #70 TaxSlayer.com Chevy in this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen to be run Sunday, August 9. Gilliland will be going back to the track where he had one of his worst racing accidents. He will also have a teammate for the first time this year with TRG’s sports car ace Andy Lally. New sponsor TaxSlayer.com will ride with David for the first time this weekend. Gilliland: “Watkins Glen will be a good debut for TaxSlayer.com on the car. The car really looks great. It has a medieval feel to it, which is cool. I am looking forward to meeting those folks and working with them over their six race term.” TaxSlayer Pro’s computerized tax return system, which was introduced to professional tax practitioners in 1992, is the first chapter in the company’s story. More info at taxslayer.com and www.taxslayerracing.com.(TRG Motorsports), see an image of the scheme on my #70 Team Schemes page.(8-5-2009) www.jayski.com/schemes/2009/70cup.htm

U.S. Chrome to sponsor #08 at Watkins Glen…who will drive?: Bob Reath, owner of U.S. Chrome Corporation announced that he and his corporation are proud to sponsor the #08 Carter Simo Racing Ford Fusion in the Watkins Glen International Raceway NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event slated for August 8, 2009. Reath and U.S. Chrome Corporation got started in NASCAR in the mid to late 80′s as a primary sponsor for Dana Patten, racing around the short tracks of New England. In 1988, U.S. Chrome partnered with Patten to run five Sprint Cup races. The team, based out of a two-stall garage in Enfield, N.H., made their debut at Michigan International Speedway with Frank Stoddard as the lead wrench and chassis specialist. Both Reath and Stoddard went on to grow in their respective fields. Stoddard cemented his place in NASCAR as a leading crew chief [14 wins with Jeff Burton] after several successful seasons with Roush Fenway Racing (RFR). Reath’s U.S. Chrome Corporation, headquartered in Stratford, CT, has six plants in Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The company specializes in functional wear, corrosion and friction resistant coatings. It also features a new environmentally friendly electrocomposite coating for several industries, including: powersports; motorsports; aerospace; agricultural; solar; automotive; firearms; FAA aircraft repair; oil; and gas. “Everyone at U.S. Chrome is excited about racing again with Frank,” says Reath. “We hope he succeeds as he has in many years of racing. We feel he has a good chance of winning at Watkins Glen and we all wish him luck.”(Carter Simo PR), Terry Labonte is listed as the dirver of the #60 Ford on the NASCXAR Entry list, but also hear it will be between Labonte and Boris Said, with no firm decision made yet but on ESPN2′s NASCAR Now, Boris Said reported he would be running the race, but didn’t say what car he would be in. Mark Your Calendars … In honor of its 40th anniversary, RCR will host a Fan Day at the Welcome, N.C. complex on Thursday, Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Activities include driver and pit crew autograph sessions, self-guided tours of RCR’s Sprint Cup and Nationwide as well as ECR’s engine shop, radio remotes, musical entertainment, pit crew competition, viewing of the DALE movie, question-and-answer session with team owner Richard Childress and much more. General admission to RCR’s Fan Day is just $5, which will benefit the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma.
CIPT Marks First Anniversary … One year ago, Richard and Judy Childress announced the formation of the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma, located at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, N.C., whose mission would be to prevent and treat the leading cause of death in children. Twelve months later, CIPT has designed an intensive first-responder training pilot program that will serve as a replicable national model and established 10 partnership and affiliates, including the World Health Organization/Centers for Disease Control and the Pediatric Medical Device Institute. Additionally, the Institute held a national conference that represented the first significant research dialogue on pediatric trauma and developed a consortium of 15 cross-appointed faculty, including nationally recognized researchers among pediatricians, pediatric surgeons and biomedical engineers. While progress has been made, hard work of education, prevention and research continues. Each year, serious injuries claim the lives of more than 12,000 children in the United States – more than all other causes combined. The Institute’s goal is to save these lives and to help kids affected by these injuries recover to lead a more normal life. GM plans to run Impala as Nationwide COT, not Camaro: Dodge and Ford will race the Challenger and Mustang, respectively, in the NASCAR Nationwide Series next year, as the series transitions to the “Car of Tomorrow” platform. And as [Auto Week] also reported, Chevy will not race the Camaro, opting to continue with the Impala. [Auto Week] asked Mark Kent, head of General Motors racing programs, why. “We’ve looked at racing the Camaro, and one thing we do not want to do is to force the car where it shouldn’t be,” Kent said. “We looked at NASCAR, for example–took a very hard look at running the Camaro in the Nationwide series. That was a request made of us by NASCAR, and we have had a tremendous partnership with NASCAR, so we took a very hard look at it.At the end of the day, because of the quest for very close competition and the need to have templated bodies in that series, we felt that by forcing the Camaro into the Nationwide templates that we were compromising the body lines of an iconic car. So at the end of the day we just could not get the Camaro in the Nationwide series to satisfy our requirements.(Auto Week)(8-5-2009)
Key Motorsports announced the signing of FabGrills.com as primary sponsor of the #40 Chevy that will be driven by young talent Jeffrey Earnhardt. This is FabGrills.com first primary sponsorship deal in the NASCAR Nationwide series and the first with Key Motorsports.(8-5-2009)
Lagasse out at CJM after Iowa: UPDATE 4: CJM Racing has announced that Denny Hamlin, driver of the #11 FedEx Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, will pilot the #11 CJM Racing Toyota at the upcoming races at Watkins Glen and Michigan. Scott Lagasse, Jr., will continue to drive the #11 entry at O’Reilly Raceway Park and Iowa. An announcement regarding the future driver lineup will be made at a later time.(CJM Racing PR)(7-24-2009)
UPDATE: Scott Lagasse Jr. will no longer compete in the CJM Racing #11 Toyota and will be looking for a way to complete his Rookie season. Lagasse, Jr., currently 12th in series driver points and a Raybestos Rookie-of-the- Year contender, will compete in this weekend’s event at O’Reilly Raceway Park near Indianapolis and in the following weekend’s race in Iowa.(PR Plus)(7-24-2009)
UPDATE 2: hearing that Kelly Bires could run some races in the #11 later this year.(7-25-2009)
UPDATE 3: The team’s sponsor, America’s Incredible Pizza Company, will remain on the #11 through the Iowa race, a news release said. Company president Rick Barsness said it will continue “our branding with Scott through new store openings and other promotions.” That could mean Lagasse could end up with another Nationwide team, with sponsorship from the Pizza Company. “The Pizza Company, from what I know, is [going] continue their branding and they’re very happy with me,” Lagasse said. “What that means, I don’t know. I have not had those discussions.”(SceneDaily)(7-25-2009)
UPDATE 4: Tuesday, Kelly Bires posted on his Facebook page, “dropped some seats off at CJM Racing”.(8-4-2009)

Brad Keselowski NASCAR Nationwide Series Interview – Iowa Speedway
The inaugural U.S. Cellular 250 Iowa Speedway lived up to its pre-race hype. As a sell out crowd of 60,000-plus saw Brad Keselowski out-duel Kyle Busch for the victory. The defining movement came when the caution came out with 38 laps to go and Busch and many of the lead lap cars pitted for fresh rubber while Keselowski, who was out front. chose not to come in. When it went back to green, Busch needed just six laps to pass Keselowski, but after another caution the GoDaddy.com Chevrolet driver stormed past Busch to take back the lead with eight to go and held onto his second win of the season. Now Iowa was also one for four tracks in the Nationwide Series Dash 4 Cash program for full-time Nationwide Series drivers. So Keselowski pocketed an extra $75,000.
Man, its sure means a lot to win this race. You know, the Dash 4 Cash program at Nationwide has to be the guy who wins that. That’s pretty neat and this is one of the headquarters for my sponsor GoDaddy.com, so that was awesome and the inaugural race here at Iowa, to win here in front of a crowd like we had today, that’s pretty awesome. It was a good race too. I’d rather win them this way than to run away with them to be honest because it is a lot more fun to say that I beat Kyle heads up, so that means a lot to me as well.
For Kyle Busch he tied a Nationwide Series record of nine straight finishes of first or second.
Wish they were all firsts, that would certainly be nice, then we would have broken another recorded. We would have the most wins in a single season but I should be so grateful and so thankful to finish second but I am not. When you finish second 12 times in a year, I’m sorry guys but when you finish second 12 times in a year, I don’t know if it’s 12 or not but it certainly feels like it. It gets to you, it gets to you really bad because there is only one car in front of you that you needed to beat that day and you didn’t get the job done. Whether it is me or the car, I have no idea but I put all the pressure on myself to come out here and win these things and when I don’t get the job done I feel like I let my team down.

ARCA RE/MAX Series Invades Springfield Mile Dirt; 47th Allen Crowe 100 on the Way; Race Serves as Finale to 157th Annual Illinois State Fair
SPRINGFIELD IL (8-4-09) – The ARCA RE/MAX Series is headed back to its roots with yet another dirt-track adventure coming to the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois Sunday afternoon, August 23rd.
The 47th running of the Allen Crowe 100 takes center stage on the world’s fastest mile-dirt track as the show finale for the 157th annual Illinois State Fair, ongoing since 1853.
“The Illinois State Fair mile dirt venues are vitally important to the character and identity of the ARCA RE/MAX Series,” said ARCA President Ron Drager. “It is a conscious effort on our part to continue to recognize the role non-pavement tracks played in the development of our series, and motorsports as a whole, and the role dirt racing continues to play today.”
The event also marks the 327th time the ARCA RE/MAX Series has raced on dirt since the series’ inception in 1953. Through it all, just over 25% of all the ARCA RE/MAX Series races ever sanctioned have been raced on dirt-tracks across America.
The Allen Crowe 100, named in honor of Springfield resident Allen Crowe, who lost his life in a sprint car crash at New Bremen Speedway, is one of two dirt-track venues on the annual ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule – the other being the Labor Day Southern Illinois 100 at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.
In last year’s Springfield race, nine-time series champion Frank Kimmel out-dueled the pack to earn his seventh career victory at Springfield. Outside of Justin Allgaier’s victory at Springfield in 2006, only 1999 series champion Bill Baird has claimed a victory at Springfield since Kimmel’s triumphant reign began there in 2000. Kimmel is also the all-time modern-day dirt winner in ARCA competition with 13 dirt wins overall at Springfield, DuQuoin and the West Virginia Motor Speedway.
The championship chase is especially tight headed to Springfield with 18-year-old rookie sensation Parker Kligerman leading Westmorland, California’s Justin Lofton by just 20 points. Lofton is the most recent winner on tour with back-to-back wins at Berlin and Pocono whereas Kligerman has won five of the last eight races.
NASCAR veteran Ken Schrader is also expected to file an entry.
Illinois entrants expected for the race include Centralia’s Joe Cooksey, Galesburg’s AJ Fike, Arenzville’s Mark Littleton, Springfield’s Kelly Kovski and more.
Former Allen Crowe 100 winners include Schrader, AJ Foyt, Al Unser, Ramo Stott, Don White, Roger McCluskey, Bob Keselowski, Jack Bowsher, Bobby Isaac, Dean Roper and Curtis Turner to name a few.
Practice for the Sunday, August 23rd Allen Crowe 100 is scheduled from 9:00-10:00 AM local time with Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell at 11:00. The race is scheduled to get underway just after 1:00 PM.
