Formula 1 Cancels Russian Grand Prix

Formula 1 will not hold the Russian Grand Prix in 2022, F1 announced Feb. 25.

The FIA cited Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as the reasoning for the cancelation.

“We are watching the developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock and hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the present situation,” a spokesperson for the FIA said in a release.

“On Thursday evening [Feb. 24] Formula 1, the FIA and the teams discussed the position of our sport, and the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances.”

The grand prix was scheduled to be held Sept. 23-25.

A replacement for the race on the 2022 schedule has not been announced.
