Lou Modestino’s Track Talk, April 18, 2024

NASCAR legend Richard Petty feels that this (point) system is “not right” and needs to be done away with, as he said on his X account: “I think NASCAR ought to do away with stage points altogether myself. Sometimes, you have a guy running 4th or 5th, gets more points than the guy that wins the race and that’s not right,” said the 86-year old famous driver to Sports Keda.

“They don’t have any horsepower,” Petty said that Saturday at the 2.5-mile track Daytona oval. “The situation is you’ve got 15 to 20 cars running. You come down to the end of the race and you’ve got to be in the right line with the right people. It’s not the decision you make as much as it’s the decision that somebody else makes,” said Petty

It appears that a large number of former NASCAR fans don’t agree with the sanction, either.  Just check the empty grandstand seats at just about every track on the yearly NASCAR Schedule.

NASCAR should heed Petty’s criticism and make the changes ASAP.  Maybe it’s too late. But as the saying goes, “You can always give it a try”.

A certain NASCAR watcher had a conversation with a source of mine and told him that NASCAR is trying to model itself like the NFL!  We can see that by a number of moves by the Daytona Beach, Fl organization over the years and agree with the observation.   NFL is a big sports powerhouse for a number of reasons.  The biggest one is the gambling aspect. NASCAR’s is already there and expects to cash in on it!
