Fernando Alonso maintains strong ties to McLaren (F1/IndyCar)
A few details about two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso‘s future with McLaren have been revealed in the past 24 hours, shedding light on the relationship the Spaniard will carry with his former F1 team.
First came news of Alonso’s number for the Indianapolis 500. As rumored, Alonso will pilot the No. 66 for McLaren in May’s race, The number decision pays homage to Mark Donahue, who started five Indy 500s with the number and brought McLaren its first win at Indy in 1972.
Overnight further news of Alonso’s ties to McLaren were revealed, as the star was named a McLaren Racing ambassador. As part of the decision, Alonso will retain close ties to the organization, driving at certain test sessions and advising the team’s drivers and engineers as necessary. He kicked off the partnership by attending Tuesday’s test in Barcelona.
“Becoming a McLaren ambassador is a true honour,” Alonso said in a team release. “It is a special team, and despite the challenges we have endured recently, it remains so. I said before I stopped racing in Formula 1 last year that I see myself with McLaren for a long-time to come, so I am delighted at this new role and the ability to stay closely involved with the team I feel is my spiritual home.”

Norris leads the way to start week two of testing (F1)
After taking the weekend off, the F1 field returned to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Tuesday to begin week two of pre-season testing. With two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso watching on from the pits, Lando Norris set a quick time of 1:17.709 to place McLaren atop the charts at day’s end.
Pierre Gasly followed in second for Red Bull Racing, with Racing Point’s Lance Stroll taking third. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi completed the top-five. Absent from the top of the speed charts was defending champions Mercedes. The company struggled to open week two, encountering oil pressure issues and completing just seven laps with Valtteri Bottas while Lewis Hamilton completed 83 slower laps.

Scott McLaughlin eyes NASCAR as “obvious” post-Supercars goal (Supercars)
Supercars star Scott McLaughlin has serious ambitions of making a NASCAR run sometime down the road. Motorsport’s Andrew van Leeuwen shared a story on Tuesday discussing the 25-year-old’s NASCAR ambitions. While McLaughlin’s first goal is continued Supercars success, he still has hopes to compete on America’s top tour.
“If I was able to tick off a championship and a Bathurst win in the next half-dozen years or so I would consider doing something else,” he said. “If the opportunity came up to try something Stateside I’d jump at it. And NASCAR is the obvious goal. NASCAR is a dream of mine and Roger Penske and the team know that.”
McLaughlin drives for DJR Team Penske in the Supercars tour, and has completed laps in one of Joey Logano‘s old Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series cars as part of a publicity stunt at the Gold Coast. He’s engaged to Karly Paone, a New York native with family stateside.

Whichever manufacturers win this weekend’s Cup Series and Xfinity Series races are likely to do so again in the fall. Ford swept the Las Vegas Motor Speedway events in Cup last year, while Chevrolet claimed both races in Xfinity. Only the Truck Series saw different brands win, with Toyota’s Kyle Busch and Ford’s Grant Enfinger each claiming a race.
