Learning to drive is something that we only ever plan to do and intend to do once in life. Unless you’re planning on getting your heavy duty driver’s licences to be able to drive trucks, then it’s likely you’re only going to want to learn how to drive a car. Whether it’s an automatic licence or a manual license isn’t relevant, but the point is, learning to drive is one skill that once you’ve learned it, you know how to do it, much like riding a bike, you can get behind the wheel of the car and the muscle memory comes back to you.
It is a skill that you carry through life and once you learn the basics, you’ll know them, but you will always continue to learn. As the rules of the road change for safety as time moves on, you have to recertify where you can so that you can make sure that you are a comfortable and confident driver on the road. When it comes to considering and setting certain goals in life, learning to drive is one of the highest ones that you can achieve. Let’s take a look at 10 reasons to learn to drive as early as you’re able to.
- Costs. Choosing to own, maintain and run your own car can be seen as a very expensive burden. But the responsibility of running your own car really does come with a whole range of savings. You can dictate and manage the cost of the car that you’re running and how often you choose to use it because there are so many options for insurance companies and car sizes and maintenance garages. You’re in complete control over whether or not you rely on expensive maintenance or not. Instead of using private taxis and Ubers to commute everywhere, you’re in full control of the costs that you put into your car.
- It’s so convenient. Even if you’ve grown up in the city, learning to drive is one of the most convenient tools you can have in your arsenal. Public transport has its benefits in busy towns and in city centres, but sometimes waiting in the cold for a bus for an hour can be the worst feeling. Being dictated to by the schedule of the buses is also a complete pain. Getting your driver’s license is something you only ever do once in life, hopefully, so having the convenience of being able to get behind the wheel whenever you need to is exciting.
- You’re going to build your confidence. Studying the theory of driving and then undertaking and passing your tests can give you personal development skills in themselves. When you opt to begin the journey of getting your driving licence and progressing through the personal development plan of a good driving instructor, you’re going to get skills under your belt that you never knew were possible. You get to develop and progress and you can use these same skills in other areas of life. If you have the tenacity to learn to drive and be a safe driver, then you have the tenacity to do anything.
- You may need it for work. There are a lot of jobs out there that you could be excluded from purely for not having the skill of knowing how to drive. If you want to be a paramedic, a police officer, if you want to work in construction, you might need to learn to drive for any of these professions. Not only that, but you could be limited as to where you live purely because of the fact that you don’t have a car. There are some rural areas that don’t have great public transport and a car becomes a necessity, not a luxury. If you are living in these rural areas then investing in yourself and upskilling to learn how to drive is going to make a big difference to your future.
- For your social life. It goes without saying that you’re not supposed to drink and drive, but if you want to go and visit friends and family, or you want to help a friend out who’s moving house, knowing how to drive and having your own car is just the basics. Driving doesn’t just give you the push to spend more time away from the computer, but it gives you something to talk about and it’s a great conversation starter when you meet new people.
- Travel prospects. Whether you’re driving to a relative’s wedding or you want a road trip around the country, being able to get behind the wheel and pick up and go whenever you want to is exciting. Throwing your bags in the boot of the car and taking yourself to the beach is just an easy way to spend your weekend, but it’s not as easy to do that when you have to adhere to a train timetable.
- You can go on adventures. As much as humans love to be social, you will get the chance to do a solo adventure, cranking up the volume on your stereo and screaming your lungs out as you drive. It’s exciting and therapeutic. You can stock the car up with camping supplies and emergency kits and take yourself into the wilderness. As long as you have enough gas in the car, you can do whatever you want.
- You gain your independence. It doesn’t matter whether you’re young and living at home, you’re in university and sharing with friends, or you’re older and living by yourself. There is a level of independence that comes with owning your own car that is unrivaled for young drivers. As an older driver, it’s your gateway to independence when you don’t have to rely on other people.
- Freedom. You have the freedom to go wherever you want, do whatever you want, and do it whenever you want. You don’t have to let travel hold you back, and that means long commutes can be a complete reality for you.
- It’s a great skill for the future. Why not make the most of your future when you can? And if you can learn this skill when you’re young with one of the best driving instructors around, then you should absolutely go for it. It’s an investment in your life.
