Massachusetts Association of Auto Clubs (MAAC): Passing of John Freeman

It is with great sadness that MAAC acknowledges the passing of our dear friend and board member John Freeman of Norton. John was a long-time member of MAAC, and he passed away on January 2nd.
John helped immensely getting the support of clubs to help fund the passing of the Year of Manufacture Plate Bill and the change in the Insurance law for vintage automobiles.  Services are at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday, January 9th, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

John M. Freeman, 81

Dateline: Norton, MA

John M. Freeman, age 81, a lifelong resident of Norton, passed away peacefully, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, January 2, 2025. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy A. (Minzner) Freeman, to whom he was wed on August 22, 1970.

Born in Attleboro, MA on April 27, 1943, he was a loving son of the late Arthur M. and Myra L. (Helpard) Freeman.

John grew up in town and was a 1961 graduate of Norton High School. He continued his education, graduating in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts from Fitchburg State College.

Mr. Freeman began his working career in 1968, selling and repairing motorcycles through the 1970’s., in addition to operating a large towing and auto salvage business, which was well known in the Norton area. He was also proud to have served at Ground Zero 9/11 with the Bristol County Sherriff’s Department.

Among other ventures in real estate, John also ran a Model A. Ford restoration business. Well-known in Norton town affairs, John was involved in many political battles and was never shy to speak his mind. John was a life member of the Norton Historical society and a former member of the Norton Lions Club.

John’s love for family was unconditional and he very-much enjoyed discussing politics, with his friends, at his garage, at “29 Ford Road” in Norton. For several years, Mr. Freeman hosted a weekly cable access show entitled “Citizen’s Forum”.

In addition to his beloved wife of fifty-four years, he is survived by his devoted sons, Peter M. Freeman and his wife Tamara of Norton and Paul A. Freeman of Norton. He was the cherished grandfather of Sam, Nick and Andrew. He was the brother of the late Elizabeth J. “Libby” Keister. He is also survived by his numerous relatives in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, January 9th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp Street (Off Route 140, Taunton Avenue) Norton.

A service in celebration of his life will be held at a later date and location to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, John’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Norton Historical Society, P.O. Box 1711, Norton, MA 02766.
