MILFORD, Conn. – Six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby will begin the season when the series hits the track at New Smyrna Speedway this Saturday night, February 11. Coby will strap behind the wheel of the historic 7NY for Tommy Baldwin Racing with sponsorship from Massachusetts-based company Mayhew Tools.

The year 1985 was monumental for grassroots racing in NASCAR.

The Modified series, standing as the sanctioning body’s oldest division having existed since Red Byron took the first NASCAR points-paying victory on the beach course in Daytona Beach on Feb. 15, 1948, was consolidated into what was then called the Winston Modified Tour. Connie Partridge and Tom Gatz hosted the gala event with track GM John Ellwood while Stephen Halpin served as master of ceremonies.
