It’s not hyperbole to describe Sunday night’s Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium as an unequivocal success.

That was the overwhelming consensus of race fans and competitors alike, after Chase Elliott outlasted hard-charging Ryan Blaney to win the season-opening exhibition race for the first time.

For the last three years, NASCAR tried a grand experiment, taking its annual preseason exhibition, the Cup Series Clash, to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Much the same as the NFL playing games in London, the idea was NASCAR should stage a race in a new market to grow the sport and let new fans see an event live.

Starting in 2025, NASCAR will introduce an unprecedented rule change to all three levels. On Tuesday morning, Sports Business Journal’s Adam Stern reported that NASCAR will partner with Xfinity to award one point to the driver with the fastest lap in a Cup, Xfinity, or Truck Series race.
