DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson has started 2022 off the way he ended 2021 – out front. The 29-year-old Hendrick Motorsports driver won the pole position for Sunday’s Daytona 500 season-opener with a lap of 181.159 mph in the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Wednesday night at Daytona International Speedway.

Martinsville gave us all we could want in a cut off race and more. The two drivers that led the most laps are moving on, but they didn’t win. A non-championship driver and three time race winner, not a hack, stayed competitive and saw a chance to win at the end and went for it. Lap after lap Alex Bowman and Denny Hamlin raced hard side by side before Bowman got lose after driving his car in too deep and sent Hamlin spinning.

Joey Logano of Middletown, CT wasn’t as dominant as Denny Hamlin but felt he had just as good a chance to win Sunday’s Cup race at Richmond. Hamlin led on the final restart with 10 of 400 laps remaining with Logano lined up alongside him. While Hamlin had led the most laps in the race, Logano had shown the ability to lead late in the event. It looked like the duo would duel to the finish. Enter Alex Bowman.
