NASCAR Cup Series: Rolling the Dice on the Playoffs’ Round of 8 at Las Vegas

After Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson dominated the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs’ Round of 12 elimination race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course, four more drivers have been eliminated from the postseason – Alex Bowman, Austin Cindric, Daniel Suarez and Chase Biscoe. Now, the remaining eight postseason contenders must adjust their focus as the Playoff spotlight turns to the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway for this Sunday’s South Point 400 on NBC, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Channel 90), the seventh race of the Playoffs and the first race of the Round of 8.

This season’s Round of 8 contenders include four former NASCAR Cup Series Champions (Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott and Joey Logano), and all eight drivers have previously competed in the Round of 8 in their careers. Interestingly, seven of the eight have previously earned a spot in the Championship 4 Round in their careers, the lone exception looking to make the Championship Four for the first time, is 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick.

Joey Logano Rejoins NASCAR Cup Round of 8 With a Vengeance

Joey Logano Rejoins NASCAR Cup Round of 8 With a Vengeance

It wasn’t Friday the 13th. It was Sunday the 13th, but just like Jason Voorhees from the well-known horror franchise, Joey Logano is back—and ready to frighten seven other survivors in the Round of 8 of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

It’s an even-numbered year after all.

When the Bank of America ROVAL 400 ended on Sunday afternoon at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course, Logano had failed to advance to the Round of 8 by four points, thanks to a determined charge through the field by Regular Season Champion Tyler Reddick.

No. 48 Team ‘Cut It Too Close’ Before Roval Disqualification – Gordon

Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman Jeff Gordon says that the organization didn’t see anything they were comfortable enough to build an appeal around for Alex Bowman and the No. 48 team.

Bowman was disqualified from Sunday’s race at the Charlotte Roval because his Chevrolet was too light in post-race inspection. There have been no details from NASCAR or Hendrick Motorsports regarding how far out of tolerance the car was, or what caused it to be too light. After crossing the finish line 18th, Bowman was moved to last place in the finishing order and credited with one point for the event.

Hendrick Motorsports Statement On #48 DQ at the Roval

Hendrick Motorsports Statement On #48 DQ at the Roval

Hendrick Motorsports will not appeal the disqualification of the No. 48 car following Sunday’s race at the Charlotte ROVAL. NASCAR allows a clear margin to account for the difference in pre- and post-race weight. After a thorough review by our team and the sanctioning body, we simply did not give ourselves enough margin to meet the post-race requirement. Although unintentional, the infraction was avoidable. We are extremely disappointed to lose a playoff spot under these circumstances and apologize to our fans and partners.

CONCORD, N.C.—Sunday’s Bank of America Roval 400 was as much about Tyler Reddick’s heroic drive into the Round of 8 in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs as it was about Kyle Larson’s continued domination of elimination races.

As Larson cruised to his second Playoff victory this season—and his second in an elimination race—Reddick charged forward from 26th after a Lap 84 restart and clawed his way to 11th—good enough to knock two-time series champion Joey Logano out of the Playoffs by eight points.
