IMSA Insider #609:  The Road Ahead: Road America Field Revealed

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The lone IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship sprint race featuring all four classes kicks off the stretch run to the finish of the final four race weekends of 2025. The freshly renamed Motul SportsCar Grand Prix at Road America marks the last time, for now, this race runs at the standard length two-hour, 40-minute duration before increasing to six hours in 2026.

The combination of four championship battles all under 100 points, intense racing, fun family atmosphere and great food and beverage options highlight the annual trip to the track frequently known as “America’s National Park of Speed.”

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – IMSA’s lightning-fast, exotic Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) entries from Acura, Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac, Lamborghini and Porsche bring unquestioned prestige, high-tech, speed and glamour to the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

But as Sunday’s Chevrolet Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park demonstrated, the WeatherTech Championship’s other three classes of Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2), Grand Touring Daytona Pro (GTD PRO) and Grand Touring Daytona (GTD) can put on one heckuva show when left to their own devices.

LEXINGTON, Ohio – Turner Motorsport has made a habit of developing drivers through its own internal ladder system and may have found its newest star Sunday at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Francis Selldorff adds his name to the list of those rising American drivers in the Turner stable such as Robby Foley and Patrick Gallagher. Selldorff, co-driving the No. 95 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT4 EVO with Dillon Machavern, rose to the challenge of fending off an overflowing pool of more experienced IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge veterans to capture his first Grand Sport (GS) class win in Sunday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 4 Hours of Mid-Ohio.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For nearly a decade, two IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge races run an additional two hours beyond the standard-length of two hours, but pack a similar punch of parity and picture-perfect finishes. Daytona International Speedway has hosted the most, with its BMW M Endurance Challenge race running to four hours every year since 2017, while Watkins Glen International, Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, Road America, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course have alternated the second.

IMSA Riding New Wave of Emerging GTP Talents

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Every “era” of sports car racing has its iconic performers. In IMSA’s more than 50-year history, that’s broken down by top-class periods of who’s starred in prototypes.

With the reborn Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) class now three years into the formula, there’s a pattern of stars starting to emerge. There are long-time prototype drivers who raced in the previous Daytona Prototype international (DPi) and Daytona Prototype and/or Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) iterations before GTP competing alongside those whose main top-class experience is focused on GTP.
