Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup Returns to Martinsville Speedway for NASCAR Playoffs Race Weekend

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (July 17, 2025) – After making its groundbreaking oval debut at Martinsville Speedway last year, the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by Michelin will return to the famous short track alongside NASCAR’s top-tier series.

Mazda’s signature spec series, now in its 20th season, will replicate its single-day exhibition event on Thursday, October 23, leading into the penultimate weekend for the NASCAR Cup, Xfinity and CRAFTSMAN Truck series championships.

20-Year-Old Jonathan Shafer To Contest  Virginia Late Model Triple Crown With Hettinger Racing
  • Three-Race Miniseries Begins This Weekend at South Boston Speedway

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (June 25, 2025) – The Virginia Late Model Triple Crown features three of the East Coast’s biggest Late Model Stock races, and 20-year-old Jonathan Shafer has cast his lot with Hettinger Racing for the popular grassroots miniseries that begins this weekend at South Boston Speedway.

Shafer will drive the No. 5 Chevrolet in Saturday night’s Thunder Road Harley-Davidson 200 at the .4-mile oval before tackling the July 19 Hampton Heat at Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway in Hampton and the Sept. 27 ValleyStar Credit Union 300 at Martinsville Speedway.

Lou Modestino’s Track Talk:  Results of New England Drivers From Martinsville

Denny Hamlin won the Cup race.  Ryan Preece of Berlin, CT came in seventh and Joey Logano of Middletown, CT finished eighth.

Austin Hill ended up the winner in the Xfinity race.  Kris Wright came in ninth.  Anthony Alfredo of Ridgefield, CT had a bad day and finished in  38th place.  Kris Wright drives the Chris and Mary Our entry who both reside in Chatham, MA on Cape Cod.

The Craftsman Truck event was taken by Daniel Hemric.  Gio Ruggerio of Seekonk, MA finished 12th and Luke Baldwin of Long Island, NY was 22nd.
