THE MODERATOR: We’re joined by Mike Kelley, Crew Chief of the No. 47 Chevrolet. Congratulations on your win today, Mike. Can you tell us a little bit about the race itself?

 

MIKE KELLEY: Well, today for us was just all about execution. We generally don’t qualify well here. I think today — or yesterday was our best qualifying effort on a speedway with a Next Gen car. We qualified 32nd. We won’t compromise our race setup, and we generally have a pretty good race car for Ricky to be able to maneuver around.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Bests Keselowski, Byron In Intense Talladega Playoff Race

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Ricky Stenhouse Jr. held off the field in overtime to claim the victory in a dramatic NASCAR Cup Series YellaWood 500 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway – edging Brad Keselowski and William Byron by a mere .006-second in a thrilling three-wide finish.

That heart-stopping finish was indicative of the afternoon of competition at NASCAR’s biggest track (2.66-mile) – which once again lived up to its reputation and provided a thrilling Playoff race that has major implications for the championship contenders.

Welcome back race fans! Long time to be away from racing. As many of you know, the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona is the kickoff to the season for me but I have to admit my attention was elsewhere a lot of this young season. After watching qualifying for the 500, I pretty much missed the Duels for the first time in forever.

There have been a fair amount of changes this year leaving me to question just how good the racing was going to be.

During the off season former Blunderbust driver Rob Bader wanted to return grassroots racing in 2021 and during the winter went out and got a Street Stock for competition at Riverhead Raceway. Among the goals Rob set was for the car to be a tribute to his late Uncle Jay Hulse former Charger driver. Then unexpected wrist surgery put Rob on injured list but undaunted he tabbed good friend Brian Brown of Riverhead to steer the car in Sunday’s May Meltdown event and in a storybook finish Brown delivered an emotional win for Bader and his family. Brad Keselowski Ties Dale Jr. and Jeff Gordon With Sixth Talladega Win

Brad Keselowski led the most important lap at Talladega, the final one. In a wild, pitched battle for the win, Keselowski got a huge push from Michael McDowell and Kevin Harvick to eke out his 6th Talladega win over Matt DiBenedetto. DiBenedetto (P5) once again came up just short for his first ever Cup win after leading 28 laps and “winning” Stage 1.
