RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – Justin Bonsignore captured a second-place finish in the Buzz Chew 200 at Riverhead Raceway on Saturday night. The three-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion was out front of the seventh race of the season in the final stages, but Riverhead weekly regular Kyle Soper found his way around, capturing his first Whelen Modified Tour win.
MILFORD, Conn. – After years of coming close, Doug Coby finally broke into NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Victory Lane at Riverhead Raceway last season. His first Riverhead win seemed to open the flood gates – as the Milford, Connecticut, six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion has won three of the last four races at the track. In the only other event, he was racing at the front early before contact sidelined him from the race.
BECHTELSVILLE, PA. – Brett Kressley of Orefield, Pa. was able to take the lead from a strong running Mark Kratz of Pennsburg, Pa. with a sweeping outside move following a lap 17 restart, then outlast several late race cautions, to score his second 30-lap T.P. One of the things NASCAR has gone all in on is the excitement that normally comes with short track and road course racing. Fans have been screaming for more short track racing. They cry that mile and a half cookie cutter tracks are “boring”.
What NASCAR wasn’t expecting were long green flag racing at two short tracks that usually produce some quality side by side, fender rubbing, wrecking kind of racing.
Rising star Derek Griffith is heading to Martinsville Speedway this Friday, April 8, to make his second NASCAR Xfinity Series start with Sam Hunt Racing in the Call 811 Before You Dig 250. Griffith finished 26th in his Xfinity Series debut driving the No. 26 Toyota GR Supra last weekend at Richmond Raceway, gaining crucial experience, which will help him rolling into the tight confines of Martinsville.
