Barrett-Jackson to Offer a Spectacular Selection of Shelby Vehicles at the 2022 Scottsdale Auction

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ‒ January 3, 2022 – Barrett-Jackson will celebrate 50 years of The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions at its 2022 Scottsdale Auction, January 22-30, at WestWorld of Scottsdale. One of the most spectacular No Reserve dockets ever amassed at Barrett-Jackson, including over 1,900 vehicles, will feature a diverse selection of authentic Shelby Cobras and Mustangs, including a true 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 that was originally sold in Scottsdale, the famous Lance Reventlow 1962 Shelby Cobra and a highly desirable Concours Premier Award-winning 1965 GT350.

The Shelby Cobras and Shelby Mustangs on the docket in Scottsdale this year include some of the finest examples we’ve ever seen.”

The 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 CSX 3356 (Lot #1397) crossing the block in Scottsdale was originally sold by Paradise Ford of Scottsdale in 1967. This vehicle received a full restoration in the early 1990s at the hands of Mike McCluskey at which time it was repainted metallic blue with white stripes and upgraded to full S/C specifications. Upgrades include a revised dashboard and trunk, as well as early taillights, an oil cooler scoop as well as widened front fender flares and lipped rear fenders.

Commonly referred to as the “Lance Reventlow Cobra,” the 1962 Shelby Cobra CSX 2032 (Lot #1382) is noted for its pivotal role in the early days of Shelby American and is a true one-of-one. As the 32nd Cobra scheduled for production, it was one of only 73 Shelby Cobras fitted with the early 260ci Hi-Po V8 engine. Originally delivered in white with a red interior, this Cobra was highly optioned, having been ordered with nearly all factory available competition items. A longtime friend of Carroll Shelby, this Cobra was originally invoiced to British-born American entrepreneur, racing driver and heir to the Woolworth fortune Lance Reventlow. Reventlow owned the Venice, California-based racing constructor known as Scarab. In June of 1962, Reventlow ceased operation of Scarab’s racing endeavors and leased his shop and manufacturing facility to Shelby for use in developing and building the Shelby Cobra. A 1965 Ford Shelby GT350 (Lot #1381) crossing the block is known as “#257.” Finished in Wimbledon White with a fiberglass hood and equipped with steel wheels, this Shelby has no racing stripes and a trunk-mounted battery. It also features Shelby American-installed KONI shocks, override traction bars, aluminum intake manifold, Cobra oil pan and exhaust headers. The interior of #257 is black with racing lap belts and features a wooden Cobra steering wheel and dash-mounted pod with tachometer and oil pressure gauge. In 2019, it underwent a meticulous Division 1 Class restoration and in 2021, it took home two Concours Premier Awards from the SAAC-46 convention in Sonoma, Calif., and the Indiana SAAC Fall Classic in French Lick, Ind.

Another genuine Shelby GT350 crossing the block in Scottsdale will be Lot #1395. This 1965 Ford Shelby GT350 was initially a showroom car and demonstrator at the request of Shelby American before being sold in 1966 to San Jose racer Jerry Mendes; he immediately sent it to Performance Associates for the Drag Unit upgrades. Mendes set an NHRA class record in the car by going 12.38 seconds at 110.83 mph in the quarter mile. Never restored, Mendes kept the Shelby GT350 in storage since 1971, making this Mustang an amazing time capsule for drag racing and Shelby history. Click here for Barrett-Jackson’s “First Look” at this 1965 Ford Shelby GT350.

“Not only was Carroll Shelby a legend on the racetrack, he was far ahead of his time when it came to the development of his Cobras and Mustangs,” said Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Over the years, we’ve auctioned some of the most valuable and desirable Shelby’s ever built, including the historic sale of CSX3015, Carroll’s personal Super Snake Cobra roadster. We have another incredible docket ready for Ford and Shelby fans in January.”

Lot #1375 is CSX4404, a 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake that is one of only three continuation Super Snakes known to exist and authorized by Shelby. The aluminum-bodied Super Snake roadster is powered by a 427ci V8 engine and is fitted with twin Paxton superchargers feeding dual Holley 4-barrel carburetors on a cross-ram intake manifold. CSX4404 had only one owner and has been driven less than 25 miles. The car includes its Build Sheet and the original Shelby Automobiles, Inc. MSO signed by Carroll Shelby.

Other genuine Ford Shelby Mustangs and Shelby Cobras crossing the block in Scottsdale include:

  • 1999 Shelby Series 1 Convertible (Lot #1330) – One of only 249 produced. The Series 1 is the only vehicle ever designed and engineered by Carroll Shelby from a clean sheet of paper and built from the ground up.
  • 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 CSX 1022 (Lot #1412) – One of only 24 Shelby Cobras made to date with hand-rolled aluminum bodies from England. It is a one-owner vehicle with less than 40 actual miles and is accompanied by the original Shelby MSO signed by Carroll Shelby as well as the Shelby Build Sheet.
  • 1968 Shelby GT500KR (Lot #1424) – One of just 1,053 fastbacks produced during the three-month KR production run, this is the only KR invited to and displayed in the Shelby American Museum and was featured there for 10 years. Professionally restored in 2010, this vehicle would go on to win the “Trifecta” of judged Shelby events that summer.
  • 1969 Shelby GT500 (Lot #1317.1) – Genuine Shelby serial #837, this vehicle is documented in the SAAC Shelby Registry and is accompanied by an original Ford invoice and Deluxe Marti Report. A California “Black Plate” car, this Shelby is powered by a 428 CJ V8 and 4-speed manual transmission.
