At Watkins Glen, there won’t be one “1/4 ley” racing, but two of them! Welcome to the ARCA Menards Series Alex Quarterley. Alex will be racing alongside his father Dale Quarterley at Watkins Glen for the General Tire 100 on September 13th. The 30-year-old driver from Westfield, Massachusetts has a racing background that goes back to go-karts, motorcycles, as well as getting his feet wet in the late model scene recently.
While his father Dale will be in the #4 car, Alex will be in a 2nd 1/4 ley Racing entry, the #3. Alex’s effort in the #3 will be run under the Mullins Racing banner though using their owner points, and Willie Mullins himself will be serving as crew chief for the car. Van Dyk Recycling will be serving as the primary sponsor for both cars while Applewood Controls, Motul Oil, Motorcycles 508, Walker Furniture will be amongst the associate sponsors for the cars. Alex and Dale will become the 2nd father-son duo to race in ARCA this year after Brian and Alex Clubb both drove a few races together.

Going into the 2023 racing season, Alex had been mostly racing on motorcycles, but did start to race in late models. He ran 2 NASCAR Advanced Auto Parts Weekly Series events at Lee USA Speedway up in New Hampshire before running a larger late model schedule in 2024. This year, Alex has run in various late model series’ such as the PASS North Super Late Model Series, the Carolina Pro Late Model Series, and the Granite State Pro Stock Series. Out of all of these series’, Alex’s best finish so far this year was a 5th at Claremont Motorsports Park in the Granite State Pro Stock Series. Ever since his father Dale made the return to ARCA in 2021, Alex has been serving as his crew chief and has had some pretty interesting experiences in that role. Such as one story involving rushing at Watkins Glen last year.

When getting his start into racing though, Alex Quarterley began with go-karts and later transitioned into nationals like at Daytona as well as indoor karting. He ended up playing lacrosse and soccer at High School after that though. But he did return to racing when his father built a flat track bike during the summer after his junior year of High School. Dale initially built it for himself, but Alex tried it out the day after a race and loved it. He brought it back up with him to Massachusetts at a nearby flat track. He would later pick up some wins in amateur motorcycles and later moved up to running with more of the experts. Unfortunately, an injury prevented him from running with more of the pros. But after seeing his father return to the ARCA Menards Series, he wanted to get more into that kind of racing and would later build a BMW Champ Car for road racing but didn’t finish it. He would end up partnering up with Jeremy Sorel to help him get into late model racing which was how that deal got put together. This year, Alex and Sorel have been serving as teammates together in many events in late model racing.

But as for how the deal to make his ARCA debut came together, it stems from Sonoma this year. Dale Quarterley’s main sponsor Van Dyk Recycling Solutions had an employee who suggested to Alex, “you think you could do it?” Dale himself then asked the same question to Alex afterwards he thought that he could do it. Alex’s main goal for Watkins Glen would simply be to make it the end for his first career ARCA start but would also love to end up in the top 10 if possible. Alex will be driving the same car that Dale drove at the West Series events of Sonoma and Portland this year while Dale will be in the car that he raced at Mid-Ohio. The colors of both cars will also be inversed as part of the deal with blue on the top of the #3 and orange on the top of the #4.

Overall though, Alex Quarterley is very excited to be racing against his father in the ARCA Menards Series and the vice-versa applies too for Dale Quarterley. Both drivers are looking to impress the field and go for the best they can in what is expected to be one of the most competitive ARCA Menards Series events of 2024. Both drivers will add their names to the list of fathers and sons who have competed in a race together, and this will also be the first time since 2019 where Dale Quarterley has fielded 2 cars from his team. That happened to also be at Watkins Glen where in the Nascar K&N Pro Series East, Quarterley fielded a car for himself but also IMSA competitor Dylan Murry. Watkins Glen will undoubtedly be a fun one for both drivers. The ARCA Menards Series will be competing at Watkins Glen International on Friday, September 13th at 5 PM ET/4 PM CT on FS1.
