This week the Nissan Formula E Team announced its first ever game drop – ‘NISMO Electric Racer Tokyo’ in collaboration with Japanese Illustrator Kentaro, to get fans revved up ahead of the Tokyo E-Prix on May 17-18.
The retro-inspired arcade game was developed in an 8-bit visual style inspired by classic 90s arcade games and Japanese gaming culture and promises to immerse gamers in the electric streets of Tokyo and the speed of Formula E.
And now Yoshida’s iconic illustrations will debut on the track, as Nissan unveil a special edition livery design for the Tokyo E-Prix.
The team’s iconic Sakura themed design has been reimagined by the Japanese Illustrator in 8-bit visual style, echoing the retro aesthetic of ‘Nismo Electric Racer Tokyo’ game.
Yoshida commented:
“The reaction to the NISMO Tokyo Racer game drop this week has been cool to watch and thousands of fans have been playing the game.
What really excited me about this project with Nissan was the opportunity to then bring my designs into the real world and have a visual impact on the track.
Tokyo is my home E-Prix, it’s an event close to my heart, so to see my work feature on the car is an honour and it’s been exciting to be part of this week’s build up.
Japanese racing culture is so unique and I’m proud the team trusted me to take their iconic Sakura themed design and reimagine it in 8-bit visual style.
NISMO Tokyo Racer embodies the spirit of Tokyo’s electric streets while honoring the city’s iconic gaming culture – and now fans will get to live that experience through the car this weekend.”
Since the release of the game tens of thousands of players have competed against one another in the scoreboards including Formula E drivers Oliver Rowland and Norman Nato.
