IMSA WeatherTech 101: The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is North America’s premier sports car racing series, featuring a diverse field of cars competing simultaneously on the same track. The series is divided into four main classes, grouped into two categories: Prototypes and Grand Touring (GT) cars. In IMSA races, all classes (GTP, LMP2, GTD PRO, GTD) compete on the track simultaneously, creating multiple battles within a single race. Faster prototype classes must navigate through GT traffic, adding strategic complexity and excitement. This weekend, all four classes are back together, competing in this weekend’s two hour, 40-minute race. This weekend, Spike the Dragon competes in the LMP2 class with drivers PJ Hyett and Dane Cameron, in the No. 99 entry. Rexy competes in the GTD PRO class, with Laurin Heinrich and Klaus Bachler as his drivers. He is the No. 77 Porsche 911 GT3 R. When you see the cars on track, you’ll notice an illuminated LED panel. This panel will tell you where each car is running within its own class. In IMSA WeatherTech, entries compete within their class as well as overall. Currently we’re in second place for both the LMP2 and GTD PRO championships. You’ll also notice Rexy has three gold teeth. The tooth on the far left with the diamond “24” is to note Rexy’s 2024 IMSA WeatherTech championship title. The other two teeth are to commemorate his wins this year at the Twelve Hours of Sebring and the Long Beach Grand Prix. You’ll notice Spike’s tail is gold, which is a nod to his win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Keep an eye out for his golden additions for his recent win at the 4 Hours of Imola, and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park! |
