20 Years Later: Danica Patrick Reflects on ‘Danica-Mania’ at Indy 500

When Danica Patrick took the lead as an Indianapolis 500 rookie 20 years ago, she could see the fans on their feet cheering.

But Patrick didn’t realize why they were cheering.

“I truly thought it was because they were so excited that the race was almost over,” said Patrick, who had taken the lead under caution on Lap 172. “I did not think it was about me.

“I was like, ‘Wow, everybody’s so excited. It’s almost over. It’s exciting.’”

Kyle Larson won the Cup race.  Ryan Preece of Berlin, CT finished seventh and Joey Logano of Middletown, CT came in 9th.
Carson Hocevar went to Victory Lane for the Craftsman Truck race while Gio Ruggiero of Seekonk, MA came in fourth.
The Indy Cars offered the Grand Prix at the flag ship Indianapolis Speedway track with Alex Palou taking the win.  Santino Ferrucci of Woodbury, CT ended up 20th.

Kiwi Scott McLaughlin Fastest As Kyle Larson Crashes At Indy 500 Test

SpeedCafe’s Stefan Bartholomaeus reports that NASCAR champion Kyle Larson and two-time Indy 500 winner Takuma Sato both emerged unhurt after finding the wall in separate incidents during the morning (yesterday).

The test featured two segments with qualifying boost levels used in the morning before the field switched to race trim for the afternoon.
