The day started off crystal clear and -30 degrees on Saturday, but that did not deter a huge field of winter racers from making the trek to Riverside Speedway and Adventure Park for the annual Winter Blast 100 snow race sponsored by 3M 2J Transport, Caron Fabrication and Batch’s Kwik Stop. Almost 90 racers were in attendance with entries coming from all over New England and beyond.

Jake Garcia kept applying the pressure, but Derek Thorn executed a flawless race to win the Snowflake 100 for the second time in three years. Thorn led wire-to-wire, but several restarts gave Garcia a chance. Ultimately, the two were too evenly matched and Thorn had the track position earned in time trials earlier in afternoon to continue a perfect weekend.

In his first three career appearances in the Snowball Derby, Derek Griffith of Hudson, NH and the LCM Motorsports Super Late Model effort have shown continuous improvement the past three Decembers at Five Flags Speedway. But, he is adding an additional challenge for his 2021 journey to Pensacola, Florida; doing Super and Pro Late Model double duty as he looks to also qualify for his first Allen Turner Snowflake 100.
