Lou Modestino’s Track Talk For March 5, 2024

The Wall Street Journal had another interesting piece on its Opinion Page by Holman W. Jenkins, Jr. headlined New Sports App Won’t Last Long .
Though,  a side bar headline stated “But the gambit will pay off if it helps old Hollywood stem its streaming losses!”

“Disney, Fox, Warner Brothers Discovery are getting together to offer a bundle of channels that occasionally show a baseball, basketball or a NASCAR event.”
“Expect the new App to be quickly bundled with Disney’s marquee streaming property.  Also expect it to be bundled with Warner MAX (Formerly HBO).  The mission is to reduce deadly ‘churn’ or subscribers dropping the channel that Hollywood is betting its future on.”
“Survival is the name of the game.  If the streaming can help stabilize their costs for the next couple of years, it could justify the effort.”
On another subject, “At this time, I’m sure you all have heard of the participation of the MA Cruisers in the World on Wheels Showcase show being held in conjunction with the Home Show inside the Gillette Stadium field house at Patriots Place in Foxboro, MA. The club will set up a display for the three-day event for March 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. This is a great opportunity for our club to promote itself beyond our, very successful,  bi-weekly cruise nights,” said the club’s spoke person.
“We will have a chance to show the public that it’s not all about cars, but all of the good the club does for others. We plan on promoting the amount of food and cash that was generated in the 2023 season for the 5 food pantries that we support. “
“Also, the public will be exposed to the scholarships that we handout to local regional schools and the Tools 4 Kids donation program that was started by Rick White. To cap off this weekend we will once again hold the small engine build off which was moth balled in 2020 when Covid hit. “
“There will be 3 Trade Schools participating consisting of Blue Hills Regional, Norfolk Aggie and Southeastern Regional schools with each entering 4 teams. This will allow us to hold the competition on both Saturday and Sunday with each day allowing each school to enter 2 teams per day.”
“With 6 engines being torn down and put back together in a timed format each day, the competition level should be intense. The 3 instructors have told me all of their students are excited about showing off their skills and competing for bragging rights as the top team. “
This show, in the future, could evolve into a replacement for the Annual World of Wheels that appeared in the Boston Seaport (Commonwealth Pier) for many years prior to the world wide Covid 19 scourge.  But, with a wider format.
We are about five weeks away from the opening of the New England racing season at the Thompson Motorsports Park in the northeast corner of CT bordering RI and MA on the weekend of April 5-7.  There will be several divisions on the card topped by three different Modified Tours and several divisions on the undercard, barring weather problems.
