May 25 – Shane Hammond Memorial Race At The New London – Waterford Speedbowl

I am excited to announce The 16th Annual Shane Memorial Race is Saturday, May 25 at The New London – Waterford Speedbowl where my family started our NEMA journey.  NEMA  & NEMA LITES will be running hard for this WIN! The LITES will be racing 37 laps in honor of Shane’s number.

I have written many articles about Shane, his journey, his crash and his legacy over the years.  You can look back at your emails or on our web site Shane Hammond.org to see how this adventure began and has refocused over the years.  I am very proud that we have contributed to the safety in the car and on the track. April 6, 2008 rocked my world it has made a difference in yours too. Just as NASCAR made changes after Dale Earnhardt’s horrific crash, the past 16 years we have experienced changes to improve safety. The mission is to keep all cars, drivers, staff and tracks as safe as possible. Cars can be replaced, you can not !!!
The Shane Hammond Believe Foundation (a not for profit) organization was founded after asking the tough questions; could this crash been avoided, is everything in place to keep racers safe? Since the start of The Shane Hammond Believe Foundation, we have changed the way drivers, clubs & tracks think about safety. Restraints, helmets on track officials, full containment seats, extra cushion in the walls just to name a few. We have drivers that have testified that these changes saved their lives. We must continue to spread the message while keeping Shane’s legacy true. Those who never met Shane, please google or just ask any old timer in NEMA about this racer who always ran clean and would help a fellow racer in a heartbeat.
I need to thank my family, Shane’s friends and racing colleagues who continue to support me and my safety mission and who remind me how special Shane was. The list is endless and changing as years go by. In the beginning we were a 501 (c3) but my grief kept getting in the way and I just couldn’t keep up with all the legal stuff so I settled to be just a not for profit. In the early years we had many donations but now they are few but I am forever grateful for all who have supported this foundation so it could help others stay safer.
A lap board for NEMA and LITES will be on the Facebook asking for $25.00 donation per lap that will be divided up equally in the drivers purse. I am looking for the Hard Charger Awards sponsor if anyone is interested. Please reach out to me via email or text if you would like to make a donation of any kind.
2024 shirts have been ordered for this race and we are offering NEMA members a special price of just $5.00. That’s a $10.00 savings!!! You can order in advance to secure your size with an email or text.
Please be sure to come to the midway on race day to check out the book, Trackrat with only a limited supply left. We will also have raffles and items for sale. A family fun pack of 4 fishing rods will be raffled this year. I enjoyed fishing with my dad and my boys grew up fishing at out local ponds. Thanks to Bill Van Slyke for this generous donation and his commitment to our cause along with Ellen Pernisiglio who is always providing us with an afghan to raffle.
Thank you ALL who have supported me, my family and the SHBF for the past 16 years. I feel truly blessed. Thanks to Reverend Don Rivers and Racing with Jesus Ministries which keeps us in prayer all over the country. We are one of the few sports that still BELIEVES. Race hard and have fun, see you Saturday!
