Doug Coby Looks For Fourth Open Wheel Wednesday Win at Seekonk Speedway

MILFORD, Conn. – Doug Coby will return to the seat of the No. 10 Mayhew Tools Modified this Wednesday night, June 29, for a mid-week show in Massachusetts. The six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion will compete with the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series in the $10,000 to win Open Wheel Wednesday at Seekonk Speedway, where he is a three-time winner.

Coby won the prestigious event in 2011, 2013 and 2016 – most of them in dominating fashion. Last year, he chased the back bumper of Matt Hirschman early and elected to pit for a fresh tire, but couldn’t get back to the front. The strategy will play a role once again this year – with one fresh Hoosier Racing tire in the pit area for drivers to change if they wish.

Coby is also excited to get back to work with new Doug Coby Racing crew chief John McKenna, who has a history of winning at Seekonk.

“I feel like you’re likely not going to win this race if you pit,” Coby said. “The only reason we pitted last year is we knew we weren’t going to win the race if we stayed out. It always seems like whenever I pit, there are never enough cautions to get back to the front. The strategy usually needs to be to have a fast enough car to run good in the heat race and get a good starting spot and be there at the end. At the end of last year, we were just getting our groove back together with John when we raced the Haunted Hundred at Seekonk. We’re going to take what we learned last year to make some adjustments to go back.. If anyone knows how the car should look and act, it’s John. He can almost tell me everything before I tell him.”

The Seekonk race day schedule includes one practice session from 3:45-4:30 p.m., followed by the tire scuffing session at 5:15 p.m. Qualifying heats will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the 100-lap race set to begin around 8:30 p.m. All tickets are available in advance at SeekonkSpeedway.com and will also be sold at the track. For those who can’t make it, the race will air live on FloRacing.TV.
