Track Talk Column – What’s New in the Racing World?

Lou Modestino Track Talk

What’s new in the racing world? How about the Andretti Clan trying to make a return to the F1 World. However, they are getting kept out for many reasons.

The biggest is the rest of F1 crowd don’t want a successful USA originated team to be successful. That crowd want all that F1 money for themselves, the current teams. One way the Andretti’s could get in would be to pull off a merger with long time struggling Hass Team that’s not very successful thus far. Go get them Andretti’s.

On the relationship between Indianapolis Motor Speedway and F1 is that both need each other. But even with Indy bossman, “smart as a whip”, Roger Penske has not been able to woo the F1 crowd back to the IMS. One issue is that all of the F1 wags think that the IMS road course is too dangerous for the F1 Circus. So, fix the tracks already! We say repair the IMS road course and get it over with. Forget temporary venues like those in Miami and Vegas that are going to fade. Eventually.

Has Goldman Sachs figured out how much NASCAR is worth? Things are very confusing at the Daytona, FL based club who seem to have tried everything in the world to bring NASCAR back in the lead in USA motorsports without success! We have not heard about any recent offers for the racing club.

Currently NASCAR does not have enough big-ticket sellers for a long time now. Things went bad for them in during the 2008 economic crash and when the biggest seller of NASCAR tix was the when Dale Earnhardt, Sr. was killed in a crash at the end of the Daytona 500 at that time.

My contacts keep telling me that short-track racing costs for a Street Stock is $40 G’s and rising! The Street Stocks are the bottom of the oval racing ladder system. And that’s a high-priced way to get started in the world of short track racing. And it’s bound to fail. We see trouble for those short tracks, everywhere, in the near future.

If those prognosticators are correct, from this point on it’s going to be a rough ride for short track operators unless they can come up with an affordable substitute. If this does not happen then say good bye to upper rungs of the racing ladder system, as well!

Hey, a lot of the short track promoters are preaching that the public are not getting their news from the newspapers any more. So, they are not wooing those daily papers to help sell tickets! Many of the track ops are depending on the pretty much inexpensive Facebook. They have not found out a way to do it via the internet. That isn’t going to work either. How about billboards, radio, TV and parades?

Another opportunity is to do discount tickets via food and beverage sales at your super-markets. The latest news is that everyone has to do food shopping weekly. It worked for a while with Tobacco Companies. Give it a try. Another opportunity for short tracks income is charging a fee for local TV broadcasts online.

How about the IROC making a comeback! It appears that there wasn’t enough income from the short tracks on promoting the SRX Series. So now the rehashed IROC will be ringing the door bells at the Super Speedways!

The Northeast Motorsports Expo went off earlier this month at the Civic Center in Augusta, MA. Owner and promoter of the 35th Annual event Steve Perry told me that the crowd, exhibits and the rest were the biggest in the show’s history!

Lots of northern New England tracks and tours were on hand for the big weekend. Among the missing , though, was New Hampshire Motor Speedway!

Coming up is the World of Wheels Showcase on the weekend of March 22-24, 2024 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA. The events will be held Socios.com Field House “The Bubble”, will include Exhibits, Cars, Trucks Cycles, ATV’s, RV’s and more. Restore, Repair and Personalize All Types of Vehicles.
